1. Work-op:

The program provides employment opportunities that support experiential learning and skill development that are mutually beneficial to students and VIU. The wage rate begins at $12.65 per hour (current minimum wage). Each position is allocated 70 hours per semester, including summer session, and there is no carry-over of hours between semesters. Students may work only one Work-Op position per semester. What supervisors need to know about Work-op:

The application deadline for Fall & Spring Work-ops is in June, and in April for the Summer semester. Applications include:

  • A posting submitted to CareerVIU, and
  • The Application Approval Form submitted to building 310, room 109, or uploaded with your posting.

Step-by-step guide on submitting your Work-op posting on CareerVIU

2. Department-Funded Student Positions (Student-Other):

These student positions are funded entirely by the departmental cost centre. Start and end dates are flexible, as are the allowable number of hours worked. Prior to hiring a student, please pick up the required paperwork from building 310, room 109.

3. Canada Summer Jobs:

This is a Government of Canada initiative that provides funding to create summer jobs for students between the ages of 15 and 30. Half of minimum wage is funded by the government, and the remaining portion is funded by the departmental cost centre. Detailed information on this program is emailed to the VIU community in December.
