The Writing Centre

Note: Open May 1 to Aug 4 2023 for both online and face to face appointments. Contact John.Hill@viu.ca with any questions. Use the blue button below to book.

We are located in the Library on the fourth floor (the floor with all the books). Turn left as you come off the stairs.

Choose a face to face tutor for a meeting in the Writing Centre, or an online tutor for a live "video chat" option or an asynchronous "etutoring" option (you attach a document to the appointment; we look at it and reattach with our comments)

Book your appointment

We also offer online Workshops using Zoom to assist with a range of academic issues.

Writing Centre information for other VIU Campuses

What is the Writing Centre?

The Writing Centre is staffed by friendly VIU faculty tutors interested in talking about any aspect of your writing, whether it's clear writing, thesis statements, citation and documentation, grammar, or organizing an argument. Even if you just want to discuss an assignment before you get started (or at any other stage in the writing process), the Writing Centre is the place to come. We cooperate with our colleagues in International Academic Support whose focus is on international students (but we are happy to see international students too).

This service is free for registered VIU students.

How to access our services

  • Book a 30-minute face to face OR online appointment up to twelve days ahead.
  • The link also accesses our colleagues in International Academic Support: you might choose them if your issue is one more related to questions of second language use, but we will try to be useful with that too, and IAS are interested in your general academic issues as well.
  • We also offer online workshops to assist with a range of writing issues. Fall 2023 schedule TBA . See zoom links for each workshop in the table.
