As an Indigenous student, you have access to a wide range of support and opportunities at VIU.

Advising Centre

Academic advisors are always ready to provide you with advice and support to help you in your academic journey at VIU. The areas they help with include:

  • programs and course selection
  • class scheduling and registration
  • educational and career development goals
  • study skills
  • referrals to other resources and supports

You can meet with an advisor in three ways:

  1. Walk in (Nanaimo campus - Building 200).
  2. Book an appointment (in person, online video meeting or by phone).
  3. Connect with an advisor (by phone or email).

Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement

Experience culture, community and a warm welcome at Shq’apthut – A Gathering Place. Meet with an Indigenous Access Coordinator, connect with Elders-in-Residence and explore a range of resources. At Shq’apthut you can:

  • navigate financial supports, scholarships and bursaries
  • access food security programs and resources
  • find safe and stable housing options
  • connect with wellness services and resources
  • explore academic resources and supports
  • build social connections and mentorship opportunities

Academic and Career Preparation

VIU’s Academic and Career Preparation (ACP) Student Success Advisors understand your needs, challenges and aspirations as an Indigenous student. They help you achieve your goals by: 

  • advising and providing guidance on obtaining an Adult Graduation diploma
  • providing information and support on preparing to write an assessment
  • helping you create an academic improvement and success plan
  • making referrals to financial aid and other specialized support services on your behalf
