PSL Leader recruitment for fall 2020 and spring 2021 will begin March 2020 

Please note that we are no longer accepting applications for PHED, PSYC or BIOL leaders.

We are seeking leaders for the following courses:

Here is what you need to know…


A Peer-Support Learning Leader is not a teacher, nor a tutor. Peer-Support Learning Leaders are hired and trained to facilitate study sessions that assist students with difficult material and developing transferable learning/study skills.

Why should you consider applying to be a Learning Leader?

  • It is a paid position
  • You will be provided training that is transferable to any workplace
  • Looks great on a resume
  • Assists with your own learning skills
  • Work with other peers as a larger team
  • Provides solid foundation in the content of the course
  • Recognized as a Co-curricular activity (extra transcript identifying your leadership skills)


  • Must have received a minimum B+ in the course they hope to support
  • Must complete all steps of the application process (details below)
  • Should have a 3.0 cumulative GPA

In addition potential leaders should be:
  • Approachable
  • Self-directed
  • Patient
  • Understanding of challenges for first year students

Leader’s Primary Activities

  • Attend mandatory two-day pre-semester training before classes begin

    (Tentatively scheduled for August 25 & 26, 2020)

  • Work an average of 6-8 hours per week
    • Attend the assigned course
    • Plan and conduct two engaging, collaborative study sessions each week
    • Meet as needed with the professor of your course
    • Attend ongoing training sessions/meetings (occur once or twice per month for approx. 2 hours)
    • Communicate with students, fellow leaders and coordinator as required

Application Process

To be considered for this position, applicants must complete all three steps:

1. Attend one of the following:

a. Four (4) or more PSL sessions during their time at VIU


b. PSL Virtual Information Session to learn more about the position


c. Meet directly with the PSL Coordinator


2. Complete the following:

a. Complete the online Application Form

b. Complete the student section of the faculty recommendation form

i. forward to faculty member to finalize

ii. once completed, ensure you follow the submission instructions on the form
