Aboriginal Students' Representative - VIUSU Board of Directors

Description

An elected representative is primarily responsible for planning and implementing Aboriginal-focused events, chairing the Indigenous Students' Caucus, liaising with administrators and campus elders, and promoting indigenous student initiatives on campus.

Position Requirements 

The VIU Students' Union is an autonomous not-for-profit society that is run by students for students. The Students' Union exists to provide events, services and advocacy for its members (all students at VIU).

The VIU Aboriginal Students’ Representative is an elected position that is primarily responsible for representing Indigenous students at Vancouver Island University. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning and implementing First Nations focused events, chairing the Indigenous Students’ Caucus, liaising with administrators and campus elders and forwarding indigenous student initiatives on campus.

Specifically, the Aboriginal Students' Representative keeps the Board informed of all issues regarding Aboriginal peoples which pertains to the work of the students' union.
While the minimum commitment is 10 hours per week, a typical Aboriginal Students' Representative will commit up to 60 hours per month in order to ensure that all aspects of the job are being done well.

Some of the skills that the individual will strengthen and utilize over the course of their one-year term are: building and maintaining positive relationships; team-oriented working; critical thinking; and active learning techniques.

The Aboriginal Students' Representative is an elected position, selected by VIU students in a general election once per year. The election is held in the Spring Semester, with nominations opening in early January. All Students' Union members who identify as Aboriginal, First Nations, or Métis are eligible to run in the election for this position.
