This position involves project coordination with a focus on Aboriginal culture in order to foster "a home away from home" environment in Shq'apthut: A Gathering Place.

Position Requirements

This position works with the Services for Aboriginal Students team in a variety of capacities including:

  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Assist and plan special events with strong cultural content throughout the year on campus for Aboriginal students as well as the main student body
  • Collaborate and network with VIUSU and other VIU departments to host or promote events
  • Gather information on scholarships, bursaries, and information from the local Aboriginal communities that may interest Aboriginal students

This position will work with volunteers and assist with special events that are either family-oriented or cultural in nature. These events are designed to facilitate the growth of the Aboriginal community on campus and create a "home away from home" for VIU's Aboriginal students.

Advantageous capacities:

  • Awareness of First Nations/Aboriginal current issues, and protocol, with a focus on the Northwest Coast people and culture
  • Connections to First Nations communities
  • Experience with planning events in First Nations/Aboriginal communities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as a team member
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft programs
