Description
This student position designs an educational bulletin board, researches and creates a Newsletter, and assists with ongoing staff projects.
Position Requirements
- Collaborate with Accessibility Services staff to research, design and source content for Accessibility Services public relations material and displays, including an annual newsletter and innovative disability-related bulletin boards.
- Assist Access Specialists as an Indigenous peer learning support coach at Shq'apthut and with on-going project work and workshops as required.
- On occasion, orient students with disabilities (SWD) to campus services and campus access routes to classrooms.
- Assist with scanning and editing of textbooks and class handouts for SWD.
- Tour the campus and report back on possible accessibility issues.
- Research and create student handouts.
- Conduct on-line research regarding Accessibility Services procedures at other institutions.
- Assist with clerical office tasks as required.
The student candidate should:
- Possess excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- Have good knowledge of computer programs including Word, Excel and Publisher
- Be a creative thinker who can come up with unique and innovative designs
- Be able to work independently with minimal direction
- Have a pleasant telephone manner for communication with community agencies for research activities
Position considerations and training:
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) 2015 training is useful. Training is free through VIULearn.
- The student will become familiar with the DAS service area, as well as orientate themselves to the campus and student residence access routes.
- An overview of equipment used and services provided by Accessibility Services is provided.
- Ethical issues and confidentiality focused on working in a service-oriented environment will be emphasized.
During the length of the appointment, if the specified supervisor is away or ill, Accessibility Services staff will always be available to supervise work.
