The Student Nursing Lab Assistant works with and under the supervision of the Simulation Coordinator assisting in different capacities in the nursing skills and simulation labs.

Position Requirements

The Student Nursing Lab Assistant (SNLA) works in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Simulation Coordinator. They will assist in different capacities in the nursing skills and simulation laboratories in the VIU Health Sciences and Human Services (HHS) Faculty.

With guidance from the Simulation Coordinator, the Student Nursing Lab Assistant:

  • Serves as a mentor, resource and leader to peers
  • Guides and supports peers in the acquisition of new psychomotor skills, thereby increasing student confidence, resilience and independence
  • Promotes a student-centred approach while following VIU policies (particularly those related to confidentiality)
  • Develops and incorporates evidence-based best practices in the delivery of low fidelity simulation teaching and learning experiences

The main duties and responsibilities of the position may include:

  1. Support and assist Simulation Coordinator in the preparation and execution of simulation suite scenarios.
  2. Work with Lab Clerk to prepare simulation equipment and materials related to simulation learning for various health care settings (E.g. Simulated injection and suture pads, cataloguing and organization of equipment used in simulation labs, etc.).
  3. Act as a standardized patient for RN and/or LPN students in simulation
  4. Work with Peer Advisory Leaders (PAL) to monitor some scheduled open skills labs.
  5. Support research related to simulation and other innovative teaching/learning.
