Description
The Forestry Public Education Student developed a forestry education activity for K-12 STEMantics in-reach and Let's Talk Science outreach programs, and piloted this activity in local schools and at VIU.
Position Overview
- Collaboration with VIU STEMantics public education coordinators, VIU Let's Talk Science coordinator, VIU Forestry staff, and forestry industry representatives.
- Consultation into BC K-12 curriculum, and best practices for K-12 education program design.
- Research into current forest ecology and forestry issues such as climate change, wildfires, and modern logging and forest management methods.
- Development of kit-based and field-based variations of a forestry activity that include tree identification and measurement, forest ecology and forest management elements.
Position Requirements
The Forestry Public Education Student:
- will have completed a successful criminal record check
- be enrolled at VIU in a forestry program or similar within the Faculty of Science and Technology
- have excellent written and oral communication skills
- be interested in education
- have disciplinary knowledge in forestry or be wiling to develop same
- be a willing collaborator
- be willing to work outdoors
