Forestry Public Education Student

Description

The Forestry Public Education Student developed a forestry education activity for K-12 STEMantics in-reach and Let's Talk Science outreach programs, and piloted this activity in local schools and at VIU.

Position Overview

  1. Collaboration with VIU STEMantics public education coordinators, VIU Let's Talk Science coordinator, VIU Forestry staff, and forestry industry representatives.
  2. Consultation into BC K-12 curriculum, and best practices for K-12 education program design.
  3. Research into current forest ecology and forestry issues such as climate change, wildfires, and modern logging and forest management methods.
  4. Development of kit-based and field-based variations of a forestry activity that include tree identification and measurement, forest ecology and forest management elements.

Position Requirements

The Forestry Public Education Student:

  • will have completed a successful criminal record check
  • be enrolled at VIU in a forestry program or similar within the Faculty of Science and Technology
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • be interested in education
  • have disciplinary knowledge in forestry or be wiling to develop same
  • be a willing collaborator
  • be willing to work outdoors
