Description

The Graduate Research Assistant, Recreation and Tourism works with the principal investigator to research, analyze, map, present and report on the artisan economy in Canada.

Position Requirements

This position involves research mapping and describing the artisan economy in Canada.

Students will work together with their supervisor to identify and record artisans across the country in the database designed for the project.

This inventory, when complete, will be analyzed to report out on the number of artisanal businesses identified, by type and province. This analysis will be conducted in Excel using descriptive statistics. Figures and tables to summarize the data will be used to develop a profile of the artisan economy. The geocodes will be used to create a map illustrating the regional concentrations of artisan across the country by type.

Student researchers will also be involved in the analysis of the database and the preparation of the article and presentation to share results. They will be co-authors on the publication and they will be invited to the North Atlantic Forum if funding can be located for their participation.

This project will enable the student to have their first co-authored publication in a respected peer reviewed journal: The Journal of Rural and Community Development, on the findings of a research project that will assist in understanding an emerging economic priority for rural areas across Canada. This project will also provide an opportunity for the student, a novice researcher, to develop skills in academic writing and in conducting research. This project will also allow the student to develop a network of academics across Canada and beyond.
