Position Overview

Vancouver Island University has made a committed to universal access planning and design. This means that within the built environment we are striving to create the most inclusive campus in Canada. The Universal Access Office, housed within the department of Campus Development works to ensure that within the built environment all students, staff, faculty and visitors can fully participate in the campus community regardless of their abilities, identities and backgrounds. Recent changes can be noted across campus through barrier-free mapping, universal and inclusive washrooms, building safe ramps, enhancing and creating accessible routes, signage and wayfinding.

We are seeking a graduate level student interested in Universal Access planning and design. Successful applicant will assist the Universal Access Team with various tasks that may include, but not limited to: research, data collection, community engagement and design. One particular area of focus will be working with the team to help research and develop the VIU Accessibility Plan, as well as assist in various campus community public engagement activities.
The selected applicant will demonstrate empathy and show genuine interest in the campus community, particularly when interacting with people with disabilities, and to those who have different identities and backgrounds than their own.

Position Requirements

Understanding of community planning, preferably in the Master of Community Planning Program or indicate relevant related experience; Demonstrated interest in Universal Access and inclusive design; Strong communication skills; Academic writing ability; Research, data collection and analysis experience; Community engagement skills; Proficient computer and design skills.
