Welcome to the Discovery Room

The Discovery Room is Vancouver Island University’s full-service learning restaurant connecting students with our community patrons. Learning by doing, Hospitality Management and Culinary Students together serve up a contemporary dining experience. By experiencing the Discovery Room, your support fuels our student’ growth and education.

***COVID-19 UPDATE: With VIU's transition to alternative forms of teaching and assessment, Discovery Room operations are suspended until May 1. There is still the possibility that the Discovery Room may be open for lunch from May 6th to June 12th pending future updates. Information about the Discovery Room's operations will be communicated here on the website and via the email list which you may sign-up for below.***

The best way to get in touch is by emailing discovery.room@viu.ca (email is checked daily). Phoning (250) 740-6338 is also an option (phone messages are returned on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays).

Parking

The nearest parking is in lot 5C (pay parking machines accept cash or credit cards). Parking can be at a premium during the lunch period so consider allowing a little extra time to find a parking space.

Menu Offerings

Menus change weekly. We are happy to accommodate special dietary needs – just let us know ahead of time.

Lunch

A la carte menu with appetizers from $6 to $8 and entrees from $14 to $16. Dessert is included. There are typically 4 to 5 choices of entrée including a fish, pasta, poultry, and meat.

Dinner

3-course menu from $27 to $34 depending on the chosen entrée. There are typically 4 to 5 choices of entrée including a fish, pasta, poultry, and meat.

Payment

Cash, Visa, Mastercard and Debit cards. We cannot accept AMEX, PCards or Cost Centre transfers.

Alcohol Service

Limited selection of wine by the bottle and glass, domestic and imported beer by the bottle and liquor.

Corkage

Please bring your favourite bottle of commercially produced wine for a $10 corkage fee (liquor laws do not allow us to open u-brew or homemade wine). This is a great opportunity for the students to practice their wine opening skills, especially if you bring wine with a cork.

Gratuities

Gratuities are not expected but are very much appreciated. Gratuities are put towards extra-curricular educational enhancement opportunity for the Hospitality and Culinary students.

Lunch & Dinner Service

Spring 2020 Lunch Service Dates:

Lunch service is offered from Wednesday to Friday (with the exception of statutory and academic holidays and special events)  from mid-September to mid-June with reservations from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

**With VIUs transition to alternative forms of learning and assessment the Discovery Room's services have been suspended until May 1**

May: 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29
June: 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12

Fall 2020 Dinner Service Dates:

Dinner service is offered on most Thursday and Friday evenings from early October to early April with reservations from 5pm to 6pm.

**With VIU's transition to alternative forms of learning and assessment the remainder of the Discovery Room's dinner services have been suspended for the Spring semester. We look forward to resuming dinner service in October.**

Our menus change weekly and are typically refreshed here every Monday for the coming week's service. Because we work with fresh ingredients in this learning environment it is not uncommon for the menu to change from what is posted.
