The Discovery Room is Vancouver Island University’s full-service learning restaurant connecting students with our community patrons. Learning by doing, Hospitality Management and Culinary Students together serve up a contemporary dining experience. By experiencing the Discovery Room, your support fuels our student’ growth and education.

Fall 2021 Semester Takeaway Service

We are continuing to offer takeaway service on Fridays so that you can enjoy the Discovery Room at home!

Here is how it works

Order online between Monday at 9am and Wednesday at noon for the coming week (orders are sent by email).

Lunch: Pickup in building 300's cafeteria and pay at the cashiers from 1-2pm (hot) or 5-6pm (for reheating at home, most Fridays). Soup is $4 and entrees are $12.

Dinner: Family style dinner for four including an appetizer, main course, sides, bread and dessert for $60. Pickup in building 300's cafeteria and pay at the cashiers from 5-6pm (the meal is chilled and intended for re-heating at home). Dates offered: Oct 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; Nov 5, 26; Dec 10.

The nearest parking is in lot 5C (pay parking machines accept cash or credit cards). Parking can be at a premium during the lunch period so consider allowing a little extra time to find a parking space.

Menu Offerings

Menus change weekly. We are happy to accommodate special dietary needs – just let us know ahead of time.


A la carte menu with appetizers from $6 to $8 and entrees from $14 to $16. Dessert is included. There are typically 4 to 5 choices of entrée including a fish, pasta, poultry, and meat.


3-course menu from $27 to $34 depending on the chosen entrée. There are typically 4 to 5 choices of entrée including a fish, pasta, poultry, and meat.


Cash, Visa, Mastercard and Debit cards. We cannot accept AMEX, PCards or Cost Centre transfers.

Alcohol Service

Limited selection of wine by the bottle and glass, domestic and imported beer by the bottle and liquor.


Please bring your favourite bottle of commercially produced wine for a $10 corkage fee (liquor laws do not allow us to open u-brew or homemade wine). This is a great opportunity for the students to practice their wine opening skills, especially if you bring wine with a cork.


Gratuities are not expected but are very much appreciated. Gratuities are put towards extra-curricular educational enhancement opportunity for the Hospitality and Culinary students.

Lunch & Dinner Service

Fall 2021 Lunch Service Dates:

Lunch service is offered on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (with the exception of statutory and academic holidays and special events)  from mid-September to mid-June with reservations from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

Sept: 15, 16, 17, 23, 24, 29

Oct: 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29

Nov: 3, 4, 5, 10, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26

Dec: 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16

Fall 2021 Dinner Service Dates:

Dinner service is offered on most Thursday and Friday evenings from early October to early April with reservations from 5pm to 6pm.

Oct: 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29

Nov: 4, 5, 12, 25, 26

Dec: 9, 10
