Graduation 2021

Virtual Celebration

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the public health order banning large public gatherings, VIU will not be having in-person convocation ceremonies in 2021. VIU will host a fun and interactive Virtual Celebration honouring its graduates which will take place on June 24, 2021 at 2:00 pm. Convocation January and June 2021

Update February 8, 2021

Information for Students has been updated with details about Graduate Photography and opportunities to become Class Valedictorian.

Update November 23, 2020

VIU continues to follow Public Health Office advice to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and all our friends and families.

We have come to the realization that it will not be safe or responsible to hold in-person convocation ceremonies in 2021.  Although there is encouraging news recently about vaccines being developed, we believe public health regulations will continue to prohibit large in-person gatherings for the upcoming several months.

Convocation is an important opportunity to celebrate the success of all our graduates. In place of the traditional ceremonies originally scheduled for January and June, 2021 at the Port Theatre, we will instead be holding a single virtual celebration (most likely in June) to recognize and rejoice in the accomplishments of our graduates.  This event will combine elements of the traditional convocation ceremonies with some fun new twists which we hope will provide a meaningful and enjoyable experience for all.

Further details on the virtual event in June will be published as they become available.

Students nearing completion of their programs are reminded that Convocation and Graduation are two separate events.  All procedures for Graduation remain unchanged, with the exception that all parchments will be mailed out after graduation has been confirmed as none will be handed out at a Convocation.

Update October 9, 2020

The University is currently considering options for Convocation ceremonies in 2021.  We expect to make an announcement by the end of October.

More details about future ceremonies will be posted as they become available.  Please contact us at with any questions.

2020 Graduation Celebration

Update June 30, 2020

We announced in April that our face-to-face convocation ceremonies would not proceed as planned in June, and we know many of you have been wondering what we are planning in place of those events. While we were initially hoping to have a face-to-face event in the fall, it has become clear that that won't be possible.

So today, we're happy to announce a date for a virtual Graduation Celebration

  • When: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 2pm
  • Where: Facebook Live

It will be an interactive experience that includes some elements of the traditional convocation ceremonies – with some fun new twists.

Please save this date in your calendars and ask your friends and family to do the same! We invite you to join the Graduation Celebration event page on Facebook, and watch this webpage for more details over the next month as well.

We know this event does not replace an in-person gathering, and so all those students who registered for a June 2020 convocation will be invited to attend one of our formal convocation ceremonies once we are able to host them again. What we can promise about our virtual event is that it will be meaningful, celebratory and a fun way to mark this important milestone.

We look forward to celebrating with you on September 30!
