External Awards include scholarships, awards and bursaries that are available to all students through agencies unaffiliated with Vancouver Island University. This financial aid is provided and administered through external government, corporate, or community organizations. Due to this fact, information we have posted regarding external awards is subject to change. Please contact award providers for up-to-date guidelines prior to application submission and check the deadlines carefully.

The External Award listings below is provided to assist with the financial burden associated with post-secondary education. This resource contains over $21.2 million in funding which has been compiled to minimize student debt.

Many students say, “I can't apply because my grades aren’t good enough”.  In reality, not all scholarships are based on grades. When applying for scholarships be aware of key documentation that may be required and outlined in the criteria section of each award.  Always read the criteria carefully to see exactly what is required to be submitted with your application.

External Awards Information

Aboriginal Ambassadors in the Natural Sciences and Engineering Award
The NSERC Indigenous Student Ambassadors (NISA) grant aims to engage Indigenous students in promoting interest and participation in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE) by visiting Canada’s Indigenous communities and schools and sharing their research and education experiences or participating in science promotion events and activities.

AFOA Canada - Indigenous Learning Centre Bursary
Two bursaries at $2,000 each available to post-secondary students attending university or college full-time in an academic program such as Business Administration, Business Management, Accounting, Commerce and/or other finance related programs.

AFOA Canada - Indigenous Learning Centre Scholarship
Available to anyone who wishes to take AFOA Canada’s online courses for the Certified Aboriginal Financial Management Program, Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator Program or Professional Development courses or one CAPA In-Person session.

Animikii Technology and Entrepreneurship Scholarships
A $500 scholarship for books, tuition, supplies or any other cost-of-living expenses related to their time in school.

Baxter Corporation - Jean Goodwill Scholarship
$2,500 Scholarships for nurses of Aboriginal ancestry to obtain specialized knowledge required within the Health Services field

BC Aboriginal Child Care Society Scholarships & Awards
Various scholarships and awards given to honour the hard work and dedication of people who support Indigenous children and their families in BC.

BCPVPA Student Scholarships
The BC Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association annually awards up to 20 scholarships, in the amount of $1000 each, to students who are graduating from the BC public school system and will proceed to a post-secondary institution.

Blue Earth Renewables Scholarship Program
A scholarship program is designed to support, educate and inspire the next generation of leaders and professionals who have the power to change the future. There are three scholarship categories to help you achieve your education goals.

Canada Post Aboriginal Education Incentive Awards
Canada Post gives $2,000 grants to Indigenous Peoples who have renewed their educational learning.

Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Fellowships and Awards
The CFUW Charitable Trust provides funds for a range of post graduate awards and fellowships to women of Aboriginal ancestry.

Cenovus Indigenous Scholarship Program
Scholarships for Indigenous students residing in Cenovus Energy operating areas who are pursuing a full-time degree, diploma or certified trade. These scholarships are valued at $3,500 and are renewable for up to four years, or to the completion of your first degree.

Ch’nook Scholars Program
Initially developed in 2007 as a scholarship for Indigenous Business Students, Ch’nook Scholars has evolved into a program that complements post-secondary business education and works to develop leadership skills and business knowledge.

Chief Joe Mathias British Columbia Aboriginal Scholarship Fund
The purposes of the scholarship is to advance education by providing educational scholarships to deserving British Columbia First Nation students who are in financial need and who demonstrate merit, in order to improve access to post-secondary education.

First Nations University of Canada
Various awards and scholarships available for students of Aboriginal ancestry.

GDC National Scholarships
Scholarships dedicated to establishing professional standards and supporting design practice in the workplace and in schools. Recipients receive scholarship awards that are applied directly to their tuition fees.

Gillis Purcell Memorial Journalism Scholarship
For Indigenous Peoples pursuing a career in journalism through a combination of studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution and experience in a newsroom.

Health Sciences Association (HSA) Bursaries for Aboriginal Students
HSA provides two $1500 bursaries to Indigenous students from BC who are continuing or proceeding in any HSA-related field.

Husky Energy Scholarships for Indigenous Students
Scholarships for Indigenous students living in communities near its operations pursue post-secondary education.

Indigenous Post-Secondary Student Support Program
Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) provides financial assistance to First Nations students who are enrolled in eligible post-secondary programs.

Indspire l Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries, Scholarships, and Awards
Various Bursaries, Scholarships, and Awards available to First Nation, Inuit and Métis students.

Irving K Barber Indigenous Awards
Three Awards available to students who identify as Indigenous, defined as First Nations (status or Non-Status), Métis or Inuit.

KPMG's Indigenous Student Awards
Open to all Indigenous candidates (First Nations, Inuit and Metis) who are attending post-secondary institutions (i.e. college or university) with demonstrated financial need for contributions to education costs. Preference will be given to students studying in the following academic programs: Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, Information Technology, Human Resources, Communications and Marketing.

M'akola Development Services Scholarships & Bursaries
Six scholarships will be awarded in five regions to Indigenous youth enrolled in Grade 12 who plan to attend a recognized post-secondary institution or training centre.

Sahtu Renewable Resources Board
This scholarship program seeks to encourage students of the Sahtú Region to enroll in college and university programs in fields related to Environmental Studies and Native Studies.

Above The Waters Bursary

Basilicata Cultural Society of Canada
Scholarships available to students whose families are of Basilicata origins. Scholarships are to provide students with financial support towards the continuation of their studies.\

BC Electrical Association - BCEA Scholarship & Bursary Program
The BC Electrical Association will award up to $10,000 in $1,000 to $2,000 scholarships. Scholarships are available to dependents of personnel of BCEA member companies in good standing, up to a maximum of two scholarships per member company

Canada Pacific (CP) Strathcona Student Scholarship Program
This scholarship program offers annual subsidies totaling $10,000 toward costs incurred through enrolment in bona-fide educational programs at the post-secondary level.

Canadian Parking Association Scholarship Program
Established as a means to foster the education of CPA members, their spouses and dependents, and employees (some restrictions apply). Scholarships are intended to provide financial assistance to students in their pursuit of academic excellence and to encourage post-secondary study that enhances the parking industry in Canada.

CGNA Nursing Scholarships
Various Scholarships and awards to members of CGNA.

Columbia Institute Scholarships
Various scholarships and awards to support lifelong learning opportunities.

Grain & General Services Union Scholarships
For GSU members, spouses or dependants who are enrolled in a diploma, degree, or certificate program at an eligible institution as a full-time student.

Harold Arvid Christenson Memorial Scholarship
Nine bursaries of $1000.00 each and three scholarships of $1,000.00 each are available to sons or daughters of past or present members or employees of the Company and grandchildren of present members in good standing. Applicants must be enrolled full-time at a post-secondary educational institution, including trade schools.

Health Sciences Association (HSA) Bursaries & Scholarships
Twenty $1500 full-time and four $750 part time bursaries are available to HSA members or their kids under 25. Ten $1500 scholarships are available to HSA members and their kids under 25.

Hospital Employees' Union (HEU) Bursaries
$350-$1000 bursaries are available each academic year for HEU members, their children, stepchildren and legal guardians, and spouses, including common-law and same-sex partners.

IATSE Local 891 Scholarships
A scholarship program to assist members and their dependents to pursue degree granting post-secondary studies.

Interior Logging Association Forestry Scholarship
The ILA awards four scholarships annually to students preparing for a bright, beautiful future in BC’s forest industry.

Manulife Financial Scholarship | Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists
Two $1000.00 scholarships available to the son or daughter of an individual member to assist students with expenses incurred to undertake studies leading to a technician or technologist diploma in a recognized program of study in engineering technology or applied science technology.

PLCAC Student Award
  The Pipe Line Contractors Association of Canada administers an annual awards program. The Awards Program is a member benefit that supports the industry’s workforce, as well as their children. The Awards Program also recognizes early career leadership from within the industry.

Royal Canadian Legion Bursaries & Scholarships
The Royal Canadian Legion is committed to supporting Veterans and their families and offers financial assistance for post-secondary education to those in need. 

TWU, USW Local 1944 Scholarship
The United Steelworkers offers 12 scholarships valued at $1000 to members of USW in good standing for two years or more.

United Steelworkers’ Union (USW) Scholarships
Members and their families are eligible for scholarships and paid internships. 

USW Lifelong Learning Scholarship
Members and their families are eligible for scholarships and paid internships.

Canadian Federation University of Women
The CFUW Charitable Trust provides funds for a range of post graduate awards and fellowships to women. 

P.E.O. Star Scholarship
This is a non-renewable $2,500 scholarship for graduating high school women which must be used in the academic year following graduation or it will be forfeited.

Soroptimist Foundation of Canada Grants
Several $7,500 grants available to female graduate students in Canada to assist them with university studies which will qualify them for careers which will improve the quality of women's lives.

Women in the Trade Scholarship
The scholarship will cover tuition, fees, and books only payable to an accredited institution or trade specific school. If covering other expenses, the scholarship will be categorized as taxable income.

Zonta International Scholarships
To address these gaps and promote gender equality in education, Zonta International supports three programs for women and girls pursuing education and careers in the traditionally male-dominated fields of aerospace sciences and engineering, business and business management and public affairs.

Canadian Federation University of Women
The CFUW Charitable Trust provides funds for a range of post graduate awards and fellowships to women. 

Canadian Water Resources Association Scholarships in Water Resources
Scholarship annually offers five scholarships awarded to graduate students whose programs of study focus on applied, natural, or social science aspects of water resources. 

Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship At Harvard University
Provides funding for students from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to conduct graduate study at Harvard University. 

John Peters Humphrey Fellowship
The Fellowships are awarded to outstanding students in order to permit them to pursue full-time graduate studies at leading graduate institutions in Canada or world-wide. Students in Canadian law and political science (or the equivalent) faculties are eligible to apply for the Fellowship.

Laura Bassi Scholarship
The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded three times per year.

Mackenzie King Open Scholarship
The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere.

Mayor Andree Boucher Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship available to two female college or university students deemed to have submitted the best research paper on a topic related to women in politics.

Rotary International Graduate Studies Scholarships
Rotary clubs in D5020 nominate and support applicants who apply as District Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars, Global Grant Scholars and Rotary Peace Fellows.

Registered Nurses Foundation of BC (RNFBC) Bursary Program
Bursaries for students who are enrolled in basic, post-basic, re-entry and graduate education degree programs in nursing.

Royal Columbian Hospital Nurses Alumnae Society Scholarship
Provides financial assistance for a nursing student registered in the second or third year of a Full Time Registered Nurse Baccalaureate Program located within the province of British Columbia.

StudentAid BC - Nurses Education Bursary
This program provides up to $1 million in bursary funding, awarded each year to qualified nursing applicants who demonstrate the greatest financial need.

Sunshine Coast Health Centre Scholarship
The Sunshine Coast Health Centre scholarship offers a recurring tuition scholarship opportunity to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in Canada for the 2020-21 school year.

Worksafe BC - PCU-WHS Scholarship

Scholarship opportunity available to complete the online Bachelor of Disability Management degree program at PCU-WHS (Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences). Eligible students will receive $6,000 annually for each of two years. Must be residents of BC, have already graduated with a 2-year diploma, degree, or other relevant educational prerequisites in a range of disciplines, but preferably in human resources, occupational health and safety, health care, social work, or business.

Collegedunia $1000 Dream Scholarship
Collegedunia $1000 Dream Scholarship is about fulfilling your dream by writing a small essay and meeting the set eligibility criteria.

One World Scholarships
$1,000 - $3,500 awards available to students participating in study, or work-abroad programs that are either experiential learning opportunities (language or cultural training), or that provide credits toward the BC academic credential they are working towards.

Organization of American States (OAS) Academic Scholarships Program
The OAS offers academic scholarships for study or research at the Master’s or PhD level that lead to a degree at a university or educational institution in an OAS Member State, except within Canada (the nominating country).

Premier's International Scholarship 
$6,000 – $10,000 scholarships for credential granting study abroad and are awarded to students demonstrating exceptional academic achievement and a clear sense of how a globally literate citizenry impacts our society.

Natural Medical Aesthetics Scholarship
Open to students in the United States and Canada entering their first year of university or college study.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Awards
Various awards available for students in science.

Novus Biologicals Scholarship
The Novus Biologicals Scholarship Program is awarded to students pursuing a degree in a science related field twice a year. 

Pacific Salmon Foundation l Stewardship Community Bursary
Bursary aims to reduce the financial barriers to achieving success for aquatic stewardship volunteers enrolled in education and training programs that support their goal of a career in salmon conservation.

Saskatchewan Association of Conservation Officers Scholarships
Two $1,000 scholarships to students who wish to serve and protect Saskatchewan’s natural resources.

SWANA Pacific Chapter l Stuart Somerville Memorial Scholarship
Available to students in programs relevant to solid waste management or environmental protection are eligible for these awards, with special consideration given to applicants who are members of SWANA or are immediate relatives (parent, child, spouse) of a SWANA Pacific Chapter member.

The BeMo & SortSmart Diversity Advocacy Scholarship
 $1,000 scholarship to students in need who are in full-time pre-medical (any graduate discipline) or medical programs in good academic standing.

Allied Van Lines Scholarship
Scholarship intended for students across the areas of business, logistics, and similar fields.

Corporate Finance Institute - Business Scholarship
Available for Canadian business school students enrolled in a degree program.

EDC International Business Scholarships
Up to 25 scholarships a year to undergraduates studying international business at university or college. In addition, five international business scholarships are available to students in programs that combine business with environmental or sustainability studies. Each scholarship is worth $4,000.

Interior Logging Association Forestry Scholarship
The ILA awards four scholarships annually to students preparing for a bright, beautiful future in BC’s forest industry.

North American Van Lines 2019 Logistics Scholarship
Scholarships for Canadian students in the area of business, logistics, and similar fields.

Risk Management Association Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships offered to students in an undergraduate program who are interested in working in the banking industry after graduation.

Worksafe BC - PCU-WHS Scholarship

AEBC/T-Base Scholarship Program
Offers scholarships to recognize outstanding blind, deafblind and partially sighted post-secondary students.

AG Bell College Scholarship
AG Bell Scholarships are for high-achieving students who have bilateral hearing loss that was diagnosed before age 4. You must be using Listening and Spoken Language as your primary communication mode.

AMI Robert Pearson Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship program is open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada with a permanent disability who are currently registered in and returning to a full-time program of study at an accredited Canadian post-secondary college or university.

BC Epilepsy Society Bursaries
BC Epilepsy Society awards bursaries to people living with epilepsy in BC who are entering, or are in a post-secondary academic, vocational, arts, technical or technological program. These bursaries can be applied towards tuition, books, on-campus housing, or other academic expenses. 

Canada student grant for services and equipment for students with permanent disabilities
This program helps part-time or full-time students with permanent disabilities pay for exceptional education related costs for services and equipment.

Canadian Mental Health Association - BC Division - Scholarships & Bursaries
Several awards are available each year to BC post-secondary students who live with mental illness or addiction.

Cerebral Palsy Association of BC l Tanabe Bursaries
Open to any student, in BC, 17 years and older wishing to attend an institute of higher learning in the following year.

Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island l Lisa Huus Memorial Bursary
Assists youth with disabilities in undertaking or continuing post-secondary education at an accredited institution in British Columbia. 

CNIB Foundation Scholarships
Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for Canadian post-secondary students who are blind or partially sighted. Also offers $5,000 and $12,500 to support students who are blind or partially sighted in master’s-level studies.

IBD Scholarship - Crohn’s and Colitis Canada
Awards ten one-time scholarships of $5,000 to students of any age, living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis who are enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary educational institute.

Looking Glass Foundation Scholarship Program
Awards academic funding to BC students who have received or are currently receiving treatment for an eating disorder, and who are ready for academic pursuit. 

NEADS National Student Awards Program
The NEADS National Student Awards Program is offered to encourage full access to post-secondary education for persons with disabilities, who often have greater barriers to participation in higher education, as well as extra costs because of their disabilities.

Sarah Gaulin Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship seeks to support and encourage the resilience of individuals with mental illness pursuing post-secondary education.

SBHAC Bursary
Open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and must be a registered member in good standing of SBHAC.

Spinal Cord Injury BC Scholarships and Bursaries
SCI BC, in partnership with the Vancouver Foundation, is offering bursaries for persons with spinal cord injuries studying in British Columbia.

AIA High Fives for Kids Foundation Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded annually across Canada to qualified students and monetary assistance is provided to those who wish to further their education in the automotive aftermarket field.

Arthur Paulin Automotive Aftermarket Scholarship Award
Provides monetary assistance to deserving students who wish to further their education in the automotive field.

Betty Spalton Scholarship
The Betty Spalton Trust Fund was established in 1999 to provide financial support to individuals obtaining an education in fields associated with the road building and heavy construction industry. 

Glenn Spartz Scholarship | Boating BC Association
The Glenn Spartz Scholarship offers financial aid to students pursuing their Marine Mechanical Technician Apprenticeship (MMT)
 offered at BCIT’s Marine Campus on Annacis Island or the Motorcycle + Marine Technician Foundation Program 
at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. 

Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) Foundation Scholarships

 of $2500 to $6000 EACH to support their post-secondary education in transportation-related studies.

USW Lifelong Learning Scholarship
Members and their families are eligible for scholarships and paid internships.

Adoptive Families Association of BC Bursaries
Bursaries available to provide funding that will assist in covering costs of tuition and/or costs directly related to the post-secondary programs.

BC Federation of Foster Parent Association Bursaries
Various bursaries for youth.

Children's Aid Foundation Graduate Awards
Students who have completed a post-secondary program for which they received scholarship or bursary support from the Children’s Aid Foundation who are under the age of 30 at the time of their submission.

Children's Aid Foundation Bursaries
Bursary Awards are available to full and part-time post-secondary students who meet the eligibility criteria, throughout the school year.

Federation of Community Social Services of BC Youth Education Bursary
The FCSSBC Youth Education Bursary assists young people that are or have been in care and want to pursue a career in the field of Human and Social Services. Bursaries support students with the financial costs of tuition, books, and supplies for post-secondary academic education, training, or upgrading.

Ken Dryden Scholarship
Each scholarship covers up to $3,000 or 80% of the cost of tuition and fees, whichever is less, and is renewable annually, based on reasonable progress toward the completion of a first undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate from an accredited publicly funded post-secondary education institution.

Public Guardian Trust Educational Assistance Fund
To assist any beneficiary selected under the provisions of the Trust to further his or her educational goals, whether academic or vocational, provided that the bursary shall not be used as a sole means of support but rather as a supplement to existing funding to cover shortfalls in fees, books, maintenance and/or transportation which might otherwise cause the individual affected to terminate their studies prematurely.

Storwell Bursary
An annual bursary of $2,000 in support of youth currently or previous in care who want to attend post-secondary schools

Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund
For Canadian youth with government care experience starting their first post-secondary program.

A Place for Mom Senior Wisdom Scholarship
For university students who are a citizen or Permanent Resident of the USA or Canada (excluding Quebec) who are enrolled and currently taking classes at an accredited college or university in USA or Canada. Selected applicants will receive a $2,000 financial donation for their compelling submission on life lessons from a senior.

Microdea Synergize Scholarship Fund
An annual scholarship granted to students attending a Canadian post-secondary educational institution.

Mission Creek Orthodontics Scholarship
A $500 scholarship to help students with the cost of their education at a college or university.

Movavi Scholarship Program
Students enrolled in or accepted into a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited university, college or school in US or Canada can create a fun video about yourself or your friends, share it on social media, and you could win $1,000.

Nanaimo - Ladysmith Schools Foundation - Scholarship Books
Graduating students from Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (SD 68) are invited to use the secure online Student Award System (in the link) to apply for Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards provided by generous local donors.

Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary
Graduating students from Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (SD 68) are invited to use our secure online Student Award System to apply for Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards provided by generous local donors. 

Okanagan Historical Society Essay Contest
Students currently in Grades 9 to 12, or at any post-secondary institution.

ParentsNeed Student Scholarship
A yearly scholarship designed for students who show themselves able to find balance between studying and raising their children.

Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship
The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship is awarded to 20 outstanding high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Winners receive a $5,000 scholarship voucher to redeem when they are registered and attending an approved K-12 teacher education program.

Overwaitea Food Group Diversity Scholarship
Up to ten $1,000 scholarships are available and will be awarded to applicants who have promoted diversity awareness and acceptance in their in their community and have not previously received the Joint Diversity Scholarship.

Ownership Identification Inc Brian Hill Memorial Scholarship
Two $500 annual scholarships who are in Agriculture or related field of study in an accredited post-secondary institution.

RBC Future Launch Scholarship
A scholarship aimed at helping young Canadians (between the ages of 15 and 29) gain new skills or develop existing ones. RBC is awarding 450 scholarships across the country worth $1,500 each to support youth in pursuing short-term courses, workshops, certificates, or online training. No need to submit grades or a transcript to apply.

Ringette Canada Scholarships
Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a recognized post-secondary education institution for the next academic year and must meet the admission standards of the educational institution specified, which must be a university, college or other educational institution located in Canada providing courses at a post-secondary school level. Applicants must have actively participated in ringette as player, coach or on-ice official for at least five of the last seven years and must be registered in the current playing season. 

Robert Caton Scholarship
These scholarships are intended to support students within the Environmental Sciences with high ideals, demonstrated interest in studies relating to atmospheric sciences, air quality and health or policy, and specific goals leading to future work in that field.

Simple Texting
$1,000 college scholarship to a hard-working student to help cover their education expenses.

Study Pug Essay Scholarship
The annual scholarship award is for students who are currently enrolled as a high school or college/university student within the United States or Canada.

SonoBoom Annual Scholarship
Scholarship available for undergraduate and postgraduate students with the passion of “Music” to receive $1,000 award.

Support Our Troops Scholarships
Both full-time and part-time post-secondary students of accredited academic institutions, career and vocational colleges are eligible. 

TD Scholarships for Community Leadership
For students who have demonstrated consistent and outstanding dedication to solving a community problem or making their community a better place.

Telegraph Star Scholarship
For a college or university student who demonstrates outstanding volunteer involvement in their community. 

Trevor Linden Community Spirit Scholarship
The Trevor Linden Community Spirit Scholarship recognizes four student leaders in the province of British Columbia who are entering their first year of post-secondary education, are in good academic standing and have made exceptional contributions.

West Vancouver Foundation
Various scholarships available to support and cultivate our future leaders.

Youth Forward "In the Driver's Seat" Scholarship
The company is seeking to reward essay applicants $3,000 in scholarships- for students entering college or already enrolled in a higher education institution – on the topic of being a safer driver.
