External awards and funding

External awards include scholarships, awards and bursaries offered by agencies unaffiliated with Vancouver Island University. These resources are provided and administered by external government, corporate, or community organizations. The External Award listings below contains over $21.2 million in funding opportunities.

You might say, “I can't apply because my grades aren’t good enough” but many scholarships, awards and bursaries consider criteria other than grades. When applying, note key documentation required. This is outlined in the criteria section of each award.

This information is subject to change. Please contact award providers for up-to-date guidelines before you apply and check the deadlines carefully.

"Applying for external awards can be a challenge. There is a lot of information gathering, writing, and reference requests. It can be a daunting task. There is always the chance that you will not be selected, but if you do not apply there is a 100% chance you will not be selected. University is expensive. Continuing to pay your rent, phone bill, internet and other bills while simultaneously paying school related costs is a huge barrier for most of us. I am glad that I put the effort into applying not only for VIU's scholarship, award and bursary profile, but also to external awards. I was granted one of these awards and it will make a huge difference in how I am able to cope with the financial stress that comes with attending university. It is always worth applying. By applying you are giving yourself a shot at being accepted."
