Bio
Welcome! My name is Lei, and I feel deeply honored to support students at VIU as a counsellor. Helping individuals navigate their journeys of self-discovery, personal growth, and academic success is a true passion of mine. With master’s degrees in both education and counselling psychology, I integrate the roles of educator and therapist to offer a holistic, compassionate approach that empowers students to thrive.
Originally from China, I’ve had the privilege of living, studying, and working in Australia and Kenya for over a decade before making my way to Canada. Now, I’m grateful to call Nanaimo home—living, learning, and working on the traditional lands of the Snuneymuxw people.
Outside the counselling space, I find peace in yoga, gardening, and spending time in nature. I’m also energized by exploring new places, tasting different cuisines, and learning from diverse cultures. One of the most fulfilling parts of my work is connecting with students and hearing the powerful, unique stories they bring.
My counselling practice is rooted in trauma-informed care. I am a certified EMDR therapist and a certified Progressive Counting (PC) therapist. I also continue to grow in areas such as somatic therapy, DBT, CBT for insomnia, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Each student’s courage and resilience inspire me, and it’s a privilege to walk alongside them through both challenges and triumphs.
I am licensed with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and a member of the American Psychological Association (APA).
Look forward to knowing you soon!
