Fitness classes
Sure, the legendary VIU steps and stairs keep you moving, but our friendly fitness classes give you a targeted way to get healthy and feel great!
Our one-hour fitness classes take place on the Nanaimo campus at the VIU Gymnasium (Building 190). Each fitness program runs for eight sessions. All skill and fitness levels are welcome!
Rates
- VIU students: $50 (8 sessions)
- Community members, VIU employees, non-VIU students: $80 (8 sessions)
Fall 2026 registration opens on August 24. Monday classes start the last week of September with all others starting in the first week of October.

Running Club
Mondays at 4 pm
A fun and supportive outdoor conditioning class combining jogging, walking intervals, hills, stairs, mobility, and bodyweight exercises. Designed for all fitness levels, this class focuses on building endurance, cardiovascular health, confidence, and community.

Mobility and Flexibility
Mondays at 5 pm
Join us for a journey toward enhanced mobility and flexibility in our dynamic class-led, designed to empower participants of all levels. This session is dedicated to optimizing your body’s range of motion through stretching, self-myofascial release, and mobility tools such as foam rollers, tennis balls, and straps.

Pilates Fusion Flow
Tuesdays at 4 pm
A full-body, low-impact movement class blending Pilates-inspired core work, functional strength, mobility, balance, and posture training. Designed to build stability, strength, and mind-body connection.

Belly Dance Fusion
Tuesdays at 5 pm
A rhythmic and empowering movement class blending belly dance-inspired patterns with fitness, core engagement, mobility, and expressive movement. No experience required.

Circus Jam
Wednesdays at 4 pm
A playful and creative movement class inspired by circus arts, blending coordination, balance, flow, and nervous system regulation. This class encourages exploration, confidence, and joyful movement in a non-judgmental environment.

Butts and Guts
Wednesdays at 5 pm
An energizing strength class focused on glutes, core, and lower body endurance. Expect targeted exercises designed to build strength, stability, and muscular tone.

Full Body Toning
Thursdays at 4 pm
A structured strength class using dumbbells and functional movement patterns like squats, lunges, presses, and rows. This class builds total-body strength, muscular endurance, and tone in a low-impact, accessible format.

Yin Yoga (Mobility Flow & Stretch)
Thursdays at 5 pm
A calming recovery-focused class combining deep stretching, long-held poses, breathwork, and slow mobility work to release tension, improve flexibility, and support nervous system regulation.
