Spring 2025 registration opens on Thursday, November 28.

Fitness classes start the week of January 13.

Sure, the legendary VIU steps and stairs keep you moving, but our friendly fitness classes give you a targeted way to get healthy and feel great!

Our weekly one-hour fitness classes take place on the Nanaimo campus at the VIU Gymnasium (Building 190) and run throughout the semester. 

Rates are discounted for VIU students and there are options for all skill and fitness levels. Please read the class descriptions below and follow the links to register.

Rise and Shine Yoga

Mondays or Wednesdays - 7:00 a.m.

Greet your day with this gentle and invigorating yoga practice. Morning yoga is a great way to wake up and set the tone of your day. Join Andrew to lead you through a series of poses working on balance, flexibility and breath work. Expect tunes and a fun welcoming environment. All levels welcome.

Butts and Guts

Mondays or Thursdays - 4:00 p.m.

One hour totally dedicated to the strengthening and toning of the core of the body and glutes. This is a non-cardio class but appropriate exercise footwear and clothing would be highly recommended. Come prepared to sweat.

Mobility and Flexibility

Mondays or Thursdays - 5:00 p.m.

This class is designed to improve range of motion using different exercises and stretches. Participants will learn Self Myofascia release to help release tension from the body and improve body function. We will be using foam roller, balls and yoga straps.

Strength Training

Mondays or Wednesdays - 6:00 p.m.

This class is an advanced option for those who have previous experience in the gym and want to take your workout to the next level. Our instructor will provide support to those looking for a challenge! *Note: class is in the weight room on the second floor of the gym.

Rise & Grind - HIIT Circuit

Tuesdays or Thursdays - 7:00 a.m.

Start your day off with a boom! Tackle cardio, fat burning, and muscle building in this high-energy circuit training class that leaves you empowered and energized for the rest of the day.

Indoor/Outdoor Bootcamp

Tuesdays or Thursdays - 12:00 p.m.

Enjoy a mix of indoor and outdoor aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, strength and endurance training, and calisthenics. In any environment, this class will get you moving and your heart pumping!

Yoga

Tuesdays or Thursdays - 3:00 p.m.

This program will lead you through a series of poses working on balance, flexibility and breath work. Expect tunes and a fun welcoming environment. All levels welcome.

Full Body Toning

Tuesdays - 5:00 p.m. or Thursdays - 6:00 p.m.

Focus on toning and strengthening the whole body with a series of exercises targeting all major muscle groups.

Zumba

Tuesdays - 6:00 p.m. or Thursdays - 7:00 p.m.

Are you ready to party yourself into shape? That's exactly what the Zumba program is all about. It's an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that is moving millions of people towards joy and health.

Bootcamp

Wednesdays - 4:00 p.m.

This is the class where literally anything goes. Push your own personal limits through a challenging and unique blend of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, strength and endurance training and calisthenics. This class is sure to get you results.

Yin Yoga

Wednesdays - 5:00 p.m.

Sink into stillness and slow down your body & mind. This class will help you increase flexibility and your range of motion and will calm your mind. A great class for stress release.
