Spring 2024 registration opens at 8 a.m. on Thursday, January 4.

Sure, the legendary VIU steps and stairs keep you moving, but our friendly fitness classes give you a targeted way to get healthy and feel great!

Our weekly fitness classes take place on the Nanaimo campus at the VIU Gymnasium (Building 190) and run throughout the semester. 

Rates are discounted for VIU students and there are options for all skill and fitness levels. Please read the class descriptions below and follow the links to register.

Intro to Weight Training

Eight sessions on Mondays starting January 22 or Wednesdays starting January 24.
4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

If you've ever wondered about the VIU weight room and how you can use the machines safely to increase your health, this is the perfect class for you. Join us and build your confidence when working out.
Instructor: Mike Brandsma

Intermediate Strength and Conditioning

Eight sessions on Mondays starting January 22 or Wednesdays starting January 24.
5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

If you've ever wondered about the VIU weight room and how you can use the machines safely to increase your health, this is the perfect class for you. Join us and build your confidence when working out.

Bootcamp

Eight sessions on Mondays starting January 22 or Wednesdays starting on January 24.
3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

This is the class where literally anything goes. Push your own personal limits through a challenging and unique blend of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, strength and endurance training and calisthenics. This class is sure to get you results.

Butts and Guts

Eight sessions on Mondays starting January 22 or Wednesdays starting on January 24.
5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

One hour totally dedicated to the strengthening and toning of the core of the body and glutes. This is a non-cardio class but appropriate exercise footwear and clothing would be highly recommended. Come prepared to sweat.

Mobility and Flexibility

Eight sessions on Mondays starting January 22.
4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

This class is designed to improve range of motion using different exercises and stretches. Participants will learn Self Myofascia release to help release tension from the body and improve body function. We will be using foam roller, balls and yoga straps.

Dance Fitness

Eight sessions on Wednesdays starting January 24.
4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Are you ready to dance yourself into shape? That’s exactly what this class is all about. It’s an exhilarating, effective, with wide range of music genre covered from Latin-inspired, belly dance, pop music, calorie-burning dance fitness-party similar to Zumba. We will also cover some technique for body isolations and steps.

Spin & Core

Eight sessions on Tuesdays starting January 23 or Thursdays starting January 25.
5:15 - 6:15 p.m.

Perfect for those looking to effectively train every part of their bodies. In this class you will challenge yourself using intervals of cycling and off the bike exercises. This class is for you if you want to increase your cardio endurance, build muscular strength and burn fat.

Yoga

Eight sessions on Tuesdays starting January 23 or Thursdays starting January 25.
4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

This program will lead you through a series of poses working on balance, flexibility and breath work. Expect tunes and a fun welcoming environment. All levels welcome.
