Learn Beyond the Classroom

The co-op program is optional for students pursing a degree in computer science, meaning students are not required to enroll and participate in co-op in order to graduate with a degree in Computer Science.  However, there are significant benefits to those students who opt to get industry experience while they are pursuing their degree.

Students interested in participating in a co-op must enroll and complete CSCI 307.  The prerequisite for CSCI 307 is: Min “B” average and completion of CSCI 370.  Students must also have completed second year prior to starting their first co-op work term.

Upon completion of CSCI 307 students can choose to do one, two or three work terms. Most students will complete their co-op work term in the summer, however there is the option to complete work-terms in the fall and/or spring.

Student Story

Kyle completed his co-op doing web development at Real Estate Webmasters in Nanaimo, B.C. Real Estate Webmasters is the world's largest provider of custom web development and technology solutions in the real estate industry.

Kyle was responsible for working directly with clients to achieve success with their online presence and create tools for their business needs. He managed multiple projects at once with tight deadlines, which exposed him to a large assortment of projects solving real world problems. “Exposure to a growing company where I was able to work on a variety of projects that I enjoyed was amazing”. Kyle also had the opportunity to work on a team with other developers and designers. This allowed him to apply and further develop his collaboration and communication skills learned during group projects at VIU.

“The co-op program made a significant impact on my career. The work experience and confidence I gained throughout the process is invaluable and has opened many doors for me.”
