Yumiko Kakutani (Practicum Counsellor)

Hi, my name is Yumiko Kakutani and I’m a practicum student with the Counselling Services Team. I am very grateful to be joining this incredibly talented team. I was born and raised in Vancouver and moved over to the Island in 2007. I am a mum to two school aged kids, a puppy, and working on my MA in Counselling Psychology which keeps me busy! I am grateful to be a guest on the unceded ancestral Coast Salish territory of the Snuneymuxw and Snaw naw as people.

For the past 18 years, I’ve worked with families supporting their children’s development, the last 7 of those years working in two Coast Salish communities. What I find exciting is connecting with people and witnessing their bravery in revealing their true selves as they work towards healing and wellness.

I am committed to providing safety, support, and care in our time together to explore strengths, gain confidence, and overcome challenges that may be interfering in living the life you want to live.

When I’m not at VIU, you can find me exploring trails with my two kids, puppy, and spouse. I also love to cook and am currently fascinated with incorporating traditional medicinal foods into tasty meals. I sit on the Vancouver Island Japanese Canadian Society as a board member and love learning about the vibrant history of the Japanese Canadians on Vancouver Island.

I look forward to meeting with you!
