Prospective students are required to complete a self-assessment for VIU Trades programs at this time. There is no fee for this.

VIU Program Assessments help evaluate your academic readiness for a program, assessing your skills in reading, writing and math.
Students applying for certain trades programs will also be assessed in mechanical and/or abstract reasoning, and space relations.
The following programs require applicants meet the program pre-requisites and successfully complete the assessment.
- Aboriginal Construction
- Baking – Professional
- Carpentry
- Electrician
- Fundamentals of Forestry - Harvesting Practices Program
- Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanic (RACM) (formerly Heating, Ventilating, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration)
- Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation (formerly Heavy Duty Mechanic)
- Heavy Equipment Operator - Road Builder Foundation
- Power Engineering/Process Operator
- Welding
The following programs require applicants meet the program prerequisites or successfully complete the assessment.
- Animal Care Aide
- Office Administration
- Automotive Service Technician
- Culinary Arts - 1 Year Certificate
- Horticultural Technician
- Nursing Unit Assistant (formerly Hospital Unit Coordinator)
- Medical Office Assistant
- Motorcycle and Marine Technician
Note: Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) assessment only required at the discretion of ECEC Program Chair.
