About the Internship:
Off-Campus Housing Coordinator
Vancouver Island University
What was the biggest takeaway for you?
I got an opportunity to build a role the ground up. I got a first-hand experience of International Student Services, and was able to work on various live projects. It was a perfect platform to test the skills developed through the MBA program.
Did it give you any clarity in what you wanted to do after graduation?
I had always been interested in pursuing a career in post-secondary. I am fortunate to have received an opportunity during my internship phase. The 16 weeks of internship made it certain for me that I wanted to pursue a career in Higher Education!
Do you have any advice for students that will be involved in an internship?
Short Advice: Create Value, and network tirelessly. It is important to actively network to look for the right internship, it is equally (or maybe even more) important to network while you are in your internship phase. You want to make the best of your internship by showcasing yourself to your colleagues, clients and/or other professionals in the industry. This is your live platform to demonstrate what you’re capable of, to add value to the firm, to go above and beyond and exceed expectations. This is your chance to ensure that the organization you are interning with, makes you an offer and hires you for good!
What work are you doing now?
On completion of my internship term, I got a longer term role in the same team, at the same organization.
How did your co-op jobs prepare you for the work that you’re doing now?
It provided me hands-on experience as a new professional. I got an opportunity to understand the work-culture and immerse myself in the Canadian ways getting things done professionally!
