Nursing Lab Assistant

This position is meant for a 3rd or 4th year nursing student. This position offers a student the ability to work in the simulation suites of HHS. Working in the simulation lab will allow them to become more confident in their own psychomotor skills and teaching abilities. Both of these will be of benefit in her/his own clinical experiences.

Working in the simulation lab will also allow for a deeper understanding a clinical picture in order to maintain the simulated reality in the lab and using the equipment (Technological Literacy). The position will allow a student to mentor other learners in earlier years of the program. Where possible, the student will act as a simulated patient for students in earlier years in the program.

Their involvement in both the simulation and the post simulation debrief will give them the opportunity take on a leadership position and hone masteries in oral communication and the capacity to engage in respectful relationships. It will offer them an opportunity for disciplinary expertise.

This position will give a student not only the chance to build supportive relationships with other students in the BSN program, but also with the Practical Nursing and dental programs. This will increase his/her knowledge of the scopes of all both professions; something that is vital in the multidisciplinary settings of today's healthcare. There will be some work (such as the construction of suture pads) which will be done entirely remotely.

Position Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to mentor and provide leadership to peers in the BSN, PN, HCA and Dental Hygiene programs.
  • The ability to support peers in the acquisition of new psychomotor skills.
  • The ability to maintain a student-centered approach to mentoring peers, while following VIU policies (particularly those related to confidentiality).
  • The ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Attention to detail.
