Position Overview

The Greenhouse and Landscape Technician Assistant work op position aims to provide VIU Horticulture students with an opportunity to achieve domain specific knowledge and competence through work experience at the G.R Paine Horticulture Centre. The student will work collaboratively with experienced VIU horticulture staff to maintain grounds and grow greenhouse crops. The student will work with horticulture supervisor using professional oral and written communication methods. Respectful interaction with others who have different abilities or backgrounds will build capacity for respectful relationships is required.

Position Requirements

  • 4-8 hours a week
  • Must be available evenings and weekends
  • VIU Drivers Permit
  • Class 5 Driver's License and vehicle
  • Occupations First Aid Level 1
  • WHIMS
  • Familiarity with the GR Paine Center and working alone practices
Work collaboratively with the VIU horticulture team to maintain diverse learning grounds at the GR Paine Center. Achieve horticulture expertise through greenhouse practices and landscape maintenance and communication with VIU staff.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Greenhouse Labor - watering, pruning, IPM monitoring
  • Grounds Maintenance - monitoring and maintaining irrigation, hand watering, mowing, weeding, mulching, pruning, planting, harvesting, using and operating tools (manual and power tools).
  • Customer service and sales - engaging with public to sell student grown crops.
  • Facilities Observation - observing grounds, equipment and structures and notify supervisor of problems and or concerns.
  • Independence and Initiative - completing some work alone with regular check-ins.
  • Communication - working alongside equal student position on weekends, ensure safety through work alone procedures
  • Event Coordination and support - participation in preparing event decor, delivering products to the main campus, communicating professionally with VIU staff and faculty for event preparation

Students in this position will gain skills in Written Communication, Oral Communication.
