Position Overview
The Chairperson of the Student Leadership Circle is a pivotal role that involves guiding and uniting student leaders from various backgrounds and disciplines. The individual in this position is expected to organize and facilitate development workshops aimed at enhancing the leadership skills of the members. These workshops should be designed to align with the Graduate Attributes outlined by the institution, ensuring that the leaders are well-equipped to meet the expectations of their roles and future careers. The Chairperson must also work towards fostering a sense of community and collaboration within the circle, encouraging peer-to-peer learning and support. This role requires strong organizational skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for leadership development. The Chairperson should serve as a role model for other student leaders, exemplifying the values and skills that the circle aims to promote.
Position Requirements
- Proven leadership experience in student organizations or similar roles,
- Strong organizational and strategic planning skills,
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities,
- Experience in facilitating meetings and workshops,
- Knowledge of leadership development theories and practices,
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups,
- Conflict resolution and problem-solving skills,
- Proficiency in office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace),
- Experience with virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams),
- Familiarity with social media management and digital communication tools,
- Understanding of group dynamics and team building techniques,
- Ability to engage and motivate peers,
- Experience in event planning and coordination,
- Knowledge of VIU Graduate Attributes and how they apply to student leadership,
- Capacity to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks,
- Sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural, political, and geographical diversity,
- Willingness to undertake training related to the role (e.g., leadership workshops, diversity training).
