The Team Member participated in the HRC West Case Competition. HRC West is the only business case competition in Western Canada dedicated entirely to the field of HR. This two-day event provides post-secondary students with a unique opportunity to test what they have learned in the classroom by merging theory with real-life simulations in a competitive environment.
Position Overview
HRC West is the only business case competition in Western Canada dedicated entirely to the field of HR. This two-day event provides post-secondary students with a unique opportunity to test what they have learned in the classroom by merging theory with real-life simulations in a competitive environment.
The HRC West competition features comprehensive business cases that explore some of the most pressing business challenges faced by HR professionals today, a chance for participants to meet and network with HR industry leaders, the potential to win prize money, and a one-of-a-kind learning experience rolled into an action-packed weekend.
Additionally, this is an opportunity to represent VIU and its business programs, and build upon a sustainable process for future student involvement in the competition.
The HRC West Case Competition Team will comprise four VIU students.
Position Requirements
To be considered, students must
Be a current VIU student, actively enrolled in one or more undergraduate courses at the time of the case competition
Must have taken, or be taking, at least one undergraduate human resources course
Must have completed one full year of undergraduate study at the time of the case competition
Must be physically present at the host institution for the duration of the competition
Demonstrated success across several HR courses
Have skills and experience with HR case analysis
Have experience and demonstrated facility with presentations and associated technology
Must commit to a series of preparatory sessions during the 6-8 weeks prior to the case
The event will require participation in:
A networking event
The competition itself with 3 hours of case work and a 30 minute presentation
Potential for a repeat presentation in the finals
Attendance during final presentations and closing celebration event

Students in this position will gain skills in active learning, capacity to engage in respectful relationships, collaboration, creative thinking, disciplinary expertise and oral communication
