Peer Facilitator - Career Studio

Description

This role assisted the Career Services Specialist in delivering job readiness workshops, provided peer review of resumes and cover letters, marketed the Career Studio, and provided VIU students with general work search information, tools, and resources to enable them to undertake effective job search activities and connect with employers. This role also provided technical support, including social media guidance and computer assistance for job search support, event planning and preparation for career fairs and hiring events as well as participation in events such as RockVIU to promote Career Studio. Career Studio Peer Facilitators have created workshops and have participated in projects such as the "What to do with your Degree" blog wherein they met with and interviewed a VIU Alumni regarding their education and career journey. Communicated with Career Services Specialist and team members, faculty and staff.

Overview

Career Studio Peer Facilitators will assist VIU students in the Career Studio, with job search, resume and cover letter development, career exploration, and referrals to other services on campus. Using the philosophy of peer-led learning they will ensure that students and visitors to the Career Studio are provided with an accessible, inclusive, and welcoming environment that aligns with the VIU Strategic Plan for 2021 - 2026, People, Place Potential. Under the direction of the Career Services Specialist, Career Studio Peer Facilitators will assist in the development and revision of programming, training, and promotional materials.

Requirements

  • Fall/Spring:
    • Must be a VIU student (enrolled in any course during the semester that work is performed).
    • Enrolment must show on the student record.
    • Must be enrolled in 3 credits.
  • Summer:
    • Student must be enrolled in a summer course (must show on their student records); or
    • Student must have completed a course(s) in the spring semester and their student record must show enrolment for the Fall semester (continuing student)
    • New Graduates: Students who finish their last class in the spring semester and have their graduation ceremony in the summer are permitted to work up until the last day of the summer semester.
  • Note: If a student's course ends mid-semester, they are permitted to work up until the last day of that month.

  • Interest in employment and hiring trends, networking, and supporting students to apply their knowledge and education in their field of study
