Student Laboratory Support

Description

Provide resources to the 4th year practicum team lead students via workshops, how to support others with course content, navigating relationships when running seminars, how to run seminars, how to be a mentor to other students, how to give and receive feedback. Workshops/resources could be offered 1x a month or more often if needed. Could have the workshop after/before Friday seminars.

Position Overview

This position will support the maintenance of the Adult Basic Education (ABE) laboratory space.

This space is primarily used for laboratory experiences that support grade 11 and 12 level Biology and Chemistry classes.

This position will also assist in testing laboratory procedures.

Laboratory Maintenance and Organization - 70-80% of position.

Maintaining a clean laboratory and preparation space.

Assist in reorganization of materials and equipment, suggest changes in space utilization.

Ensure all reagents and non-consumables are appropriately labelled.

Maintain a digital and hard-copy record of chemicals and quantities in the laboratory.

Ensure Safety Data Sheets are available and current.

Laboratory Development Support - 20-30% of position.

Assist with the testing of laboratory procedures by:

  • Reviewing written laboratory procedures.
  • Conducting laboratory procedures with appropriate supervision.
  • Creating an accurate record of laboratory results and observations.
  • Identifying areas for improvement and providing written and oral feedback on the laboratory procedure.

Position Requirements

  • Completed WHMIS training - before application or as part of onboarding.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail required.
  • Must be comfortable with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel).
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience as a student in Biology or Chemistry laboratories is an asset.
