Coach Leader - Peer Access Coaching Program - Coaching

The Peer Access Coach Leader provided direct peer coaching to new students and supported the other volunteer Peer Access Coaches. The Peer Access Coach Model is based on a collaborative approach whereby the Peer Access Coach works together with new students to identify their goals and develop an action plan.

Position Overview

The Work Op Peer Access Coach Leader collaborates with Accessibility Services staff to offer one-on-one peer coaching to students registered with Accessibility Services. Meet with up to 4 students weekly to support their transition to university during the semester. The Peer Access Coach Model is based on collaborative coaching whereby a Peer Access Coach works together with a new student. This program is adapted from “Collaborative Peer Coaching” by Janet Sinclair, 2006.  

The Coach and student work together to:

  • Define the goal
  • Brainstorm possibilities – Explore resources
  • Develop and action plan – Explore resources
  • Follow-up-Reflect-Revise
  • Support 6-8 other Peer Access Coaches along with staff
  • Attend weekly debrief/training sessions on Wednesdays from 10-11 am
  • Assist with the matching of Peer Coaches with students
  • Develop promotional materials for the project

The Coach supports the Go-Getter Student-Led Club:

  • Assist the club members to host events
  • Support the club status application
  • Assist with finding space for events
  • Assist with recruitment of new members

Position Requirements 

Returning students requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Be a creative thinker who can come up with unique and innovative ideas
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction
  • A strong interest in supporting other students to overcome learning barriers to access education
  • Motivation to support student retention at VIU
  • An openness to ask for help and seek out appropriate resources when required
