How Does Student Printing Work?

Getting Started

Before you can begin printing off your beautiful essays and pictures of cute cats from the internet, you'll need to get some stuff set up first.

The following sections will instruct you on everything you need to do to get started.

Adding Funds to your PaperCut account

You pay for printing by having funds in your PaperCut account. Please note that amounts added to your account for printing are not refundable.

  • You need to have a VIU student computer account to be able to print. Please see our page on creating a VIU student computer account for further details of this step.
  • You need to have a VIU student card to add money to your PaperCut account.
  • You pay for printing with a prepaid balance in your PaperCut account. Your account will be debited when you choose to print your print job from printer(s).
  • You can add funds to your account online using your PaperCut User Account or by purchasing a prepaid card from the Campus Store and redeeming it online.

For detailed instructions on how to add funds to your account and much more, please see Student Print Instructions and FAQs. This document will continue to be updated as new questions arise.

Now that you have added funds to your account, see the next sections on how to add the FindMe printer, send print jobs, and release them from the printers.

How do I print from a VIU computer?

If you do not have the FindMe printer installed on your computer, you will need to follow the instructions located here:

If you are unable to get the FindMe printer installed, please email ITHelp@viu.ca explaining the issue. Please include the computer name in your email!

To find the computer's name, look for a sticker on the computer. Depending on the computer's location, it will have a specific name.

For example...

  • A computer in Building 300 Room 100 would be labelled something like "300-100-12345"
  • A computer in Building 180 Room 203 would be "180-203-12345"
  1. If you do not have the FindMe Printer installed, please see step 1.

  2. Select the Print command from the program in which you are working (e.g. Word, Explorer etc.)

    • You will need to go to the File menu, select the Print command, and wait for the Print Dialogue box to appear. Click on the drop-down menu next to the "Printer Name" field at the top of the dialogue box, and select the FindMe printer. Click OK at the bottom of the Print dialogue box.

Printing costs 10¢ per side for black & white printing and colour printing is 50¢ per side.

  1. Head over to the desired printer and tap your student ID card on the printer's card reader to login. First time users will be prompted to authenticate the card. You will only do this once and your card will work at all Ricoh devices. Please see this document for instructions.
  2. From here, you can either select "Print All" or select "Print release" in the bottom-right corner and select which print jobs you want to print (you may also delete jobs from this menu if you changed your mind).
  3. Remember to log out by either tapping "Log Out" in the top-right corner or by tapping your student ID card on the printer's card reader again.
